Welcome To 6th ICEPIM (International Conference & Exhibition on Pipeline Integrity Management)

As Technical Convener of the 6th International Conference & Exhibition on “Pipeline Integrity Management” (6th ICEPIM), it is my pleasure to invite you to join me at this important event being held at Mumbai from 3-4 December 2020.

Pipelines as we all know, are the safest and most economical method of transporting hazardous petroleum products but in case of failures, the same pipelines have the potential to create havoc & devastation to nearby habitation. Besides the loss of precious human lives, these accidents have the potential to affect the economy of any growing nation like ours.

Though India has fairly, a good track record of operating the pipelines safely, some of the worst accidents happening across the world in the last decade has shaken the entire Oil & Gas industry. These accidents have made the Govt & pipeline regulators across the globe worried about the safety & integrity of the pipelines traversing through densely populated areas & susceptible to thefts/ pilferages.

In this changing environment towards stricter laws, the Safety & Integrity of the pipeline assets cannot be compromised at the cost of production. The pipeline integrity which unfortunately was a bit neglected in the last century has now become an area of major focus at international forums today, which is indicative of the due importance this subject deserves. You must have noticed that there has been a sudden spurt in the number of international Conferences & Workshops on Pipeline Integrity Management (PIM) being organized across the globe. This is rightly so, to focus on the importance this subject it deserves & also to build up a consensus for strict adherence to ISO standards / other international codes on issues related to the Safety & Integrity of Pipelines.

I am glad that this conference covers a larger span and touches almost all aspects covering Safety, Integrity & Reliability of Natural Gas & Petroleum Product Pipelines, both Onshore & Offshore. It also covers the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network including PNG/CNG which is expanding exponentially in India. The theme for the panel discussions on the last day is very appropriate for this occasion, covering Pipeline Integrity Management for Deepwater /subsea pipelines and New Inspection Techniques for Non-Piggable pipelines. National and international experts from the government, industry, research and academia will be presenting papers that are expected to offer a good insight on all facets of pipeline safety & integrity, emerging technologies and the challenges faced by the industry.

I am a bit disappointed that the Water Pipelines in India are often neglected and do not get the importance it deserves. Maintaining the integrity of water pipelines in India today is equally important, not so much for safety but to maintain an uninterrupted supply of water to the industry and the households. If the nation aspires to become a five trillion economy with more than a hundred smart cities in the next five years, the network for new pipelines is bound to grow exponentially posing more challenges for maintaining the integrity of these precious assets.

Abstracts will be evaluated based on relevance, uniqueness/originality, technical content, and clarity.
